The life of The Girl Shelby

Urgh - it's Monday and I so don't want to be here. The weekend went far too quickly for my liking. Saturday was a good day. Friend Bonnie Sin and I were both going up to London to see seperate sets of friends so we decided to travel in together. Company when travelling is always good becuase you seem to get there so much faster. We went our seperate ways at Kings Cross and I headed to London Bridge to meet up with friend Jennifer Jackme. We met at the station and headed off to find the Tate Modern. It's not a building you can exactly miss, however, it took us some time to find it. We went wrong straight away as we took the wrong entrance out of the tube station. One lap around the block later, we were back where we started, but at least had amanged to find signs to point us in the right direction.

I enjoyed the time in the gallery. I like modern art generally, although some of the more conceptual stuff goes straight over my head. After a couple of hours wandering round laughing in disbelief at the instalation pieces we were ready for lunch and headed off to a cafe on Bankside.

We had to line our stomachs as we spent the afternoon in Vinopolis learning how to taste and appreciate wine. However, I still seem to be missing something. When we were asked what the wine smelt like I could not identify the citrus or vanilla which alledgedly was present in the taste and smell of the wine! We tried all sorts of different wines including champange (which I have now definitively proved to myself that I don't like) port, sherry as well as the usual array of red and white wines. We also had a Bombay Sapphire cocktail which was my favourite drink of the afternoon. We had 7 tastings each as well as the cocktail, but it was nowhere near enough to end up inebriated although my stomach was doing some strange things thanks to the bizzare mix of fluids I’d put into it during the afternoon! We finally left Vinopolis at about 6pm and headed back to Jennifer Jackme’s place in Balham where we were meeting her friends. We were supposed to go out for dinner but after a day spent on our feet we just ordered a takeaway. I had to tear myself away fairly early so I could get back home at a reasonable time.

Yesterday was spent doing boring stuff like food shopping, going to the gym and tidying up the flat. I don’t have much more to say about the day. Hopefully I’ll find out if I’ve got a new job this week so will post again then.

Happy Valentines Day!

Just checked friend Pimp Daddy Rothschild's blog. Apparently I'm the only person I the world who liked Closer. I know a lot of people who have seen the film and everyone hated it. The moral to that story is don't go and see a film on my recommendation.

Thankfully it's Friday again. It's been an OK week. The interview on Tuesday was OK, although my gut feel is that I haven't got the job. I have found out that I'm up against someone on redeployment and work friend Pussy Paradise. The redeployment guy has the advantage because as he is at risk of becoming unemployed in 5 weeks time, HR are looking for reasons to be able to give him the job. As for me, I had to really stand out from the competition and I don't think I did that. I should find out at some stage next week whether I've got the job or not. I have no idea what is going on with the other job I applied for as I've heard absolutely nothing about that one.

Friend Busty Lustley finished work to go on maternity leave on Wednesday. I'm really saddened by this. She was my best friend (if anyone is allowed to use this term after the age of 12) at work and it's not the same without her. It's much quieter if nothing else! I have friends around, but many of them now don't sit near me. Friend Jamal Jupiter is probably my best bet as he sits fairly near me and I've known him for several years now. When we spoke yesterday he was up for the position of my best friend at work, but I suspect that it won't be quite the same. On the positive side, if I get the job I was interviewed for on Tuesday, when Busty Lustley comes back to work next year we will be on the same team again!

Tomorrow I'm going to London to see friend Jennifer Jackme. She has a very cultured day planned out for us - modern art in the morning and wine tasting in the afternoon!

I can't believe it's February already. This year is hurtling past. I still don't have time to blog much mainly as I'm so busy at work and my home PC has died. Whenever I switch it on, it boots up and then within a couple of minutes just turns itself off and reboots again. Answers on a postcard to the usual address and the winner gets to come and try to fix the damn thing.

Work is busy as I've spent most of the last couple of weeks on my own. Admittedly I did give my chronically unreliable contractor the week off, but he extended his holiday by 2 extra days without telling me and at our busiest time. The good news is that I'm finally getting rid of him as we aren't renewing his contract at the end of this month. The bad news is that he's taking more time off to go to interviews. I'm beyond caring now.

I applied for 2 new jobs here last week and I have an interview for one of them next Tuesday. I'm really worried - I haven't been interviewed for nearly 2 years and the last time I had an interview I really cocked it up. It's going to take over 2 hours which I can barely afford as I have to prepare a presentation, present it, answer questions on it and then be competency interviewed for an hour and a half. I also have to do an online personality test beforehand. Apparently the recruiter uses this to work out what your weak areas are and then grill you on them in the interview. There are 2 other candidates for the role who are also being seen on Tuesday so I should find out pretty quickly. I now have to spend this afternoon finding out what Business Marketing do and what we offer our business customers. Getting a couple of books on interview techniques also wouldn't go amiss...

Outside of work things have been pretty dull. I ordered a new TV and DVD player on 1 January which still hasn't arrived. I keep getting told a date and then it gets pushed back by a few weeks. I had a feeling of deja vu about this when I realised this is exactly what happened when I ordered the Peugeot car. This means I've got 4 months of waiting patiently before I give up and cancel the order. I knew buying online was a big mistake - it cost £350 less than buying from the high street but it's a much longer wait.

I guess it's time to do some of the work that's been mounting up overnight. As if I don't do it then my contractor probably won't be here to...
