The life of The Girl Shelby

Another weekend bites the dust… I managed to get quite a lot done so I’m pretty impressed with myself. I also managed to get hooked on Top Gear yesterday, which is about cars apparently and not where to score the best drugs (bad joke, I know) Unfortunately it was one of those days where they showed a whole day of the same programme which meant I spent several hours in front of the TV when I should have been trying to work my newly rebuilt computer. On the plus side I now know what cars I should be buying, although most of the one they like seem to cost over £100k. If I sell my house I might be able to afford one in 20 years or so.

Last week was uneventful as I spent most of my time recovering from the migraine from hell which assailed me on Monday evening. As a result I only went to the gym once and so to make up for it I have to go 5 times this week. I’m going out on Friday night, which means 5 gym visits in 6 days which could be something of a new record.

The thing I’m most excited about right now is that my computer has been rebuilt and appears to be fully functional thanks to friend Bonnie Sin and her boyfriend. This means I have finally been able to order my ipod which is due to arrive later this week. I took the long term view and got the 30gb version. I currently have around 200 CDs. Even if I put every track from every CD onto my ipod (which is unlikely) it should still last me forever! I have a huge list of top tunes to download as soon as I’ve got my internet connection back (for some reason work have blocked access to itunes – something to do with not being work related…) I will finish by begging you not to burst my bubble with your ipod horror tales. I’m sure I will learn soon enough the ipod battery life is crap or that they just die for no apparent reason. I’ve waited so long for this I want to enjoy it for a few weeks at least!

I seem to be afflicted with amnesia every Sunday night to the extent that I can’t remember what went on ion the previous week. It’s my team meeting at 8.30 and I have to account for myself last week. I can’[t remember what I did at the weekend let alone what I was doing last Monday. You may wonder why I’m wasting time writing this. I’m hoping that the diversionary activity may kick my brain into gear so I can remember what I did in my 37.5 hours at work last week (actually 40+ hours is closer to the truth)

The weekend was good, I think (as I said I’m struggling to remember anything at this point in time) We went out for an Indian for friend Kinky Malibu’s birthday. The good news was that she liked her presents, although the Japanese limited edition figurine perplexed her a bit (me too, friend Bonnie Sin was responsible of the buying of that one) We went onto the local Wetherspoons so Kinky Malibu could meet up with some other friends from work. I’m going to sound really old by saying this, but I really don’t enjoy going to really crowded pubs any more, although I was never a big fan even when I was younger. I cannot see the appeal of only being able to speak (shout) at one person at a time as it’s too noisy to partake in a group conversation and constantly being pushed around as people try to get through the pub to the bar. Luckily we had seats on Saturday, but once we were in, it became impossible to get out again.

Sunday I woke up with what felt like a hangover. It wasn’t a hangover as I was driving so wasn’t drinking. I decided to go out to try and clear my head, but stupidly I ended up in the worst place to go in the world if you are feeling a bit delicate – Toys R Us. I wanted to find a present for friend Boopsie Venus and her forthcoming baby. As I’m seeing her in a couple of weeks I had to get myself organised, otherwise the baby won’t get anything from me until it’s several years old. As you can imagine Toys R Us was filled with many annoying sounds – children screaming, the Thomas the Tank Engine theme on repeat, fanfares and incomprehensible staff announcements. None of these made my head feel any better. What made things worse was that I couldn’t find what I wanted to get so I had to find something else which prolonged the agony. Once I’d purchased something suitable for a newborn I had to go and lie down in a darkened room for several hours.

I didn’t get this finished before my meeting, but don’t worry I managed to give a plausible account of my actions last week. Now I’d better start thinking of excuses for this week.

Hurray! It’s Friday again. January really feels as if it is dragging this year. I feel like it should be mid-March by now, although that probably has more to do with the unseasonably warm weather. Not much has happened in the last week so I’ll write about my plans for the weekend.

I think I may have to make another trip to Audi. Generally these trips aren’t a good thing as they invariably turn out to be expensive. When the car went in a couple of weeks ago for it’s service, Audi picked up an intermittent fault with something (as you can tell I was paying close attention) They advised the part was replaced at some stage soon. I asked how I would be able to tell if it got worse (trying to avoid further expenditure) and they said I may have trouble starting the car or I’d see a drop in fuel economy. Two weeks later and the fuel gauge is in the red and I’ve done 50 less miles than I would have usually. I’ll keep an eye on it before I make any rash decisions, but it’s probably advisable to see how much replacing the malfunctioning part of my engine will cost. I don’t want to spend more money on the car as I wanted to buy an ipod! However, looking for the positive side I can see my nice salesman again, who gets more appealing at each visit. As he’s a salesman looking for a commission, I really shouldn’t get sucked in, but it’s hard not to be flattered when someone remembers everything about your previous conversations.

Tomorrow night we are going out for friend Kinky Malibu’s birthday. Friend Bonnie Sin and I have been much more organised than usual and so sorted out her birthday present before Christmas. I can’t remember what we’ve got her but I’m sure it’s lovely…

I went to the gym last night which wasn't unusual. You may wonder why I'm mentioning it. I want to sign myself and friends Bonnie Sin and Kinky Malibu up for Salsa classes as part of our new years resolution to take dance classes. Imagine my surprise when I was told that the classes would be held at 1.30 on Friday afternoons. Apparently that is a really convenient time for lots of people. There must be lots of people at Cannons who don't work between 8.30 and 5 Monday to Fridays. I feel discriminated against because I have to go to work!

I'm thing about changing the description of my blog as I think it contravenes the Trades Descriptions Act as my life is fairly dull generally. Kiss 100 have a new feature called Faceless where an anonymous listener rings a voicemail number and leaves her thoughts which they then put on the radio. The idea of my life being of interest to thousands of listeners is laughable.

So I was thinking about countdown to 30 and giving you daily updates on my state of mind regarding impending 30-dom and the loss of my 20s. However, I'm hoping I won't feel any different as I don't want this to be a negative thing. Any ideas for a new description for this blog should be sent on a postcard to the ususal address.

Speaking of upcoming 30-dom I realised last week that if I wanted to have a baby before I was 30 (which I don't really, it was hypothetical) then I would have to get pregnant that week. Much hilarity ensued when the boys who work with me started offering other colleagues up for stud purposes. Needless to say I didn't take up any of their kind offers. However, I might have been interested in the studly properties of the guy I like at my Audi dealers who I saw on Saturday when I took my car in for a service!

It's been a busy few weeks. I'm not even going to try to do this in chronological order - it will be just as it comes up in my head.

The work Christmas party was terrible, as expected. It was generally agreed the that the only think which could counteract holding at the office would be to have fantastic entertainment (and for that read very famous) The rumours reached fever pitch when we all received a copy of Robbie Williams's latest CD in the post the day of the party. Robbie, in case I haven't mentioned it before, is our latest celebrity endorser. We are paying him an obscene amount of money to tell everyone across Europe why they should get a phone on our network. As a result we have been expecting him to put in an appearance at a corporate event at some stage. Once we actually got to the party we then heard that the Kaiser Chiefs would be playing. So we all piled into the marquee at 8.30 and waited. Once I'd had half a pint of larger tipped down my front and god know what down my back, the DJ finally announced the band which was just a passable covers band. At that stage I gave up and headed home, although I spent the rest of the night thinking 'what if it got lots better after I left'. As it turns out, it didn't get any better and although the Kaiser Chiefs were booked they never showed up.

After being sorely disappointed by work on the Tuesday evening, the company played something of a blinder when an e mail went out saying that there were complimentary tickets available for the Duran Duran concert on Thursday. Work friend Holly Humper and I took advantage and headed off to Earls Court. I have to say it wasn't as fantastic as when I went last year, but still pretty damn good. I sang, I danced, I screamed so it could be said that I had a good time! Needless to say I came back in love with John Taylor (again) but that one has now passed after a week.

I've seen lots of the usual suspects, friends Bonnie Sin, Kinky Malibu and Mary Ellen Thong. We've been out for dinner, been to each other's houses, been to the cinema (I can recommend Mrs Henderson Presents and The Producers) - basically done the same things that we do for the rest of the year! I saw the new year in with Kinky Malibu and Mary Ellen Thong. We had a relatively quiet one, but who said that being noisy was more fun?

Christmas was OK. I had a nice day with my family and then we saw my Aunt and cousins on Boxing day. One of my cousins got the interactive DVD 'Now That's What I Call a Music Quiz' for Christmas so we were playing that. I loved it so much that I had to go out and buy it for myself. I knew all of my useless music knowledge would come in useful at some stage. My only problem is that I have played it now with a number of people and I can’t find anyone to really challenge me as I keep winning. Kinky Malibu’s parents had brought some other DVD games which we played on New Year’s Eve. The British Pub Quiz was really difficult. Three and a half university educations between us and our best score was only 24 out of 50.

I was in work between Christmas and new year. It was really quiet and I finally managed to send the budget out so Customer Services have no excuses for missing their targets in January. However, I still haven’t done the filing I was hoping to get out of the way and my e mail inbox is raging out of control. Things still haven’t settled down here although the new head of department has been announced. I have applied for another job, but I am waiting for the new vacancies to be posted. I need to start looking externally, but it’s a bit difficult when I don’t have a computer at home. I feel really cheeky looking for external jobs at work! I don’t want to use an agency as I got sick of being hounded last year by the recruiters. In fact I am still getting stuff from them even now, although they have stopped calling me at least.

I started this post last week, so I’m going to finish it now before it gets even longer.
