The life of The Girl Shelby

I'm tired of the rain. I just read friend Pimp Daddy Rothschild's blog and the weather in the land down under in winter sounds a darn sight better than summer here. I went to Uxbridge for a meeting on Wednesday (this job is sending me to the best places - Glasgow, Uxbridge and it looks like I'll be going to Warrington next…) and it rained the entire way home. Thankfully today looks a little more promising.

Work is keeping me busy, I don’t think I’ve got home from work before 7.30pm in the evening this week. Some of it is my own fault - I decided on Tuesday night at 5pm that I was going to write a presentation for Wednesday’s meeting instead of turning up with a few scrappily written notes, so that took me a couple of hours. Last night I worked until 7pm before going out to meet friends Bonnie Sin, Mary Ellen Thong and Kinky Malibu for dinner. It was our last supper as Mary Ellen Thong is moving to Blackpool with her husband this weekend. Obviously we’ll still see each other, but it’s a bit of a long way to come for dinner once a month!

Unfortunately my Dad was made redundant yesterday. He knew it was coming as his company had made someone else redundant earlier in the week who had 5 years of billable work lined up and as Dad didn’t have any work lined up he was expecting to go. He seems pretty upbeat considering, but as the mortgage has been paid off now I guess they don’t need so much to survive now. This is the first time that this has happened since I’ve been an adult – it’s a weird feeling that potentially I may now have to help support my parents as neither of them are working. I’m sure that at least one of them will get a new job, but if not I’ve reached that point in my life where they need me more than I need them. I guess that is the definition of grown up!

My postings have become somewhat sporadic recently. However, enjoy this one while it's fresh. Work as ever has been keeping me very busy. Ultimately this is a good thing, but it's bad for blogging and generally trying to organise my life outside of work. I get paid my bonus this week which I'm very excited about. Although it isn't as much as the 2005 bonus I gave up to move here from my old company, I think it's pretty good for 14 weeks work!

I have been looking at moving house as I saw a new development advertised. I went to see it and fell in love with the place. It's an ex-mental hospital which is being developed into luxury apartments. Although it doesn't sound very appealing, it was built in the 19th century by the Victorians who liked to construct ornate buildings for the most mundane of purposes. As a result this hospital looks like a French chateau dropped down in Hertfordshire. It's set in lovely parkland and will have a gym on site. The downside is that it is within a mile of a sewage treatment works so I have been trying to find out how smelly it might be!

On top of that I was trying to decide whether to keep my current flat and rent it out or whether to just sell. As a result I have spent lots of time with mortgage advisors, estate agents and letting agent. Depending on when you ask me, you get a different answer as to what I'll do. At the minute it looks like I'm selling as I don't need the extra hassle, but by next week I might have decided that I want to be a property tycoon!
